Time Waste Management presents Searching for Bubbie by Brian Feldman
On Oct. 18, 2016, award-winning D.C.-based performance artist Brian Feldman will remain at an overhead projector set up in the gallery and slowly work his way through 78 word search games over the span of 10 hours in memory of the 10th yahrzeit of his maternal grandmother, Henrietta Wattman (Jan. 10, 1928 – Oct. 18, 2006).
On Oct. 18, 2006, Brian Feldman was sitting at the counter of Infusion Tea in College Park when he received a phone call from his mom. His grandmother, or “Bubbie” as he’d always known her, was dying in the ICU at Lucerne Pavilion of Orlando Regional Healthcare (now known as Orlando Health), and he was told to get to the hospital as quickly as possible.
While distraught by this news, she had been in the hospital for months, he remained seated at the counter without saying a word about it to the staff. Why he never asked someone for an emergency ride, or called for a cab, or simply stood up and started running, he still doesn’t entirely understand. He ended up walking the 3 miles to the hospital and by the time he arrived, over one hour later, she was dead. Cause of death: Complications from MRSA.

Brian Feldman is an award-winning performance artist. Best known for leaping off of a ladder 366 times over 24 hours (Leap Year Day), eating dinner on stage with his real life family – in front of paying audiences – over 40 times (The Feldman Dynamic) and, five years prior to same-sex marriage being legally recognized in the state of Florida, legally marrying a stranger in support of marriage equality via a game of spin-the-bottle (Brian Feldman Marries Anybody*); in addition to the more than 110 other projects he has presented since August 2003 through Brian Feldman Projects, the premiere presenter of experimental time-based art in the nation’s capital. wpadc.org/artist/brianfeldman
