"Gender for some is an expression of self that sits at the root of identity. For others, it's a performative ritual necessitated for survival in a highly gendered world. From language to dress, mating relations and religion, gender plays a role in finding stable categories through which we make sense of ourselves and our lives-- it's a tool passed down throughout the ages to teach us how to live.

But gender is a highly contested topic in contemporary society. Maybe that's because it's how we physically wear the changes of the society on our bodies. It's also a node of human experience designated as needing cultural and political work to achieve our newly forming ideal of freedom and justice.

From pronoun use to critiques of cisnormativity and patriarchy, the conversations being had around gender can be difficult and diverse. This panel will be an exploration of a host of these topics from varying perspectives. From social justice activism to Christian ideology, topics related to gender in contemporary culture will be discussed from varying perspectives, representing some but not all of the influential perspectives on gender present in today's discourse.

Join us for a much needed conversation about gender in the 21st century at A Place Gallery." - Jahfre Colbert
